Strengthening the Academia-Industry Connection Through Data and Advisory Bodies
In June 2025, the University of Prishtina and the University of Iowa co-organized two significant events to advance higher education reform and strengthen ties between academia and the private sector: a Workshop on Corporate Panels and Curriculum Reform and a Data Symposium on Strategies for Career Services and Labor Market Alignment.
Workshop on Corporate Panels and Curriculum Reform
Held on June 20, the workshop was led by Dr. Lon Moller, an expert from the University of Iowa, and brought together 20 representatives from various faculties of the University of Prishtina, including quality coordinators, associate deans, and academic program directors.
Topics addressed included establishing and managing corporate panels, integrating employer feedback into curriculum reviews, and the importance of aligning academic programs with labor market needs. Participants praised the interactive format and exchange of practical experiences, emphasizing their readiness to implement these practices within their academic units.
Symposium: Data-Driven Strategies for Career Services and Industry Cooperation
On June 19, 2025, a symposium was held at the Faculty of Architecture, attended by representatives from universities, the private sector, student organizations, and development partners. The event opened with a welcome address by Prof. Majlinda Gjelaj, Vice Rector for Quality Assurance, who highlighted the critical role of data in institutional planning.
In two keynote presentations, Dr. Cassie Barnhardt shared findings from analyses on internship practices and career center approaches in Kosovo, while Dr. Lon Moller discussed the role of corporate panels as bridges between academia and the labor market.
A discussion panel featured representatives from ICT, agribusiness, finance, student bodies, and career center officials, shedding light on challenges and opportunities for preparing students for the workforce.
Impact
Both events significantly raised institutional awareness of the importance of data-driven decision-making and industry involvement in academic program development. Concrete steps were discussed to deepen cooperation between universities and the private sector, aiming to enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in Kosovo.
