Prof.Asst.Dr. Sefer Avdiaj from Department of Physics of University of Prishtina is staying for research at Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA as a beneficiary of Fulbrgight Scholar Grant from thw US Department of State. The Fulbright Scholar Grant is considered one of the most prestigious grants.
In the framework of his research work in NIST, Professor Sefer Avdiaj is working on the new standard for pressure and vacuum measurement using optical interferometry. This technique uses the Fixed Length Optical Cavity (FLOC) and Variable Length Optical Cavity (VLOC) method in order to measure gas refractivity. By knowing gas refractivity is possible to determine pressure of the gas. FLOC and VLOC will be used as the primary standard for pressure determination and will completely eliminate the need for mercury manometers that are currently used as primary standards in metrology of pressure and vacuum because mercury manometers have resolution limitation and vapor of mercury are poisonous. The new definition of the pressure unit (Pascal) will be a quantum definition that means moving away from material masses and passing to a universal constants that is also a request from the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures that all units of measurement should be based on universal constants.
